The Non Invasive Process Known as Microdermabrasion

By Mats Sumellin

Microdermabrasion is a skin enhancement procedure that is becoming more well known over time. This noninvasive treatment is painless, and most of all, affordable. Those who would like some skin enhancement but lasers, injections or other cosmetic procedures are worrisome, it is a good option.

Microdermabrasion can soften fine lines and wrinkles, decrease pore size, help smooth coarsely textured skin, reduce superficial hyper-pigmentation (age spots), and decrease the appearance of scarring. The procedure actually makes it easier for your skin care products to penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin and help build collagen which gives skin its youthful appearance.

Microdermabrasion is a powerful exfoliation performed with special equipment. This will result in the removal of dead skin cells that have accumulated on the top layer of the skin.

Crystal microdermabrasion equipment involves a hand held wand that sucks air inside of it, using a compressor. When the wand touches the skin, a vacuum is created. While the directed aluminum oxide crystals move over the skin, dead skin cells are dislodged during the process. Another tube in the wand then vacuums up the dead skin cells and crystals.

There is also another type of microdermabrasion that uses a diamond-tip and a vacuum, but crystals are not necessary for this kind. The diamond tip itself exfoliates the skin and the vacuum whisks the dead skin away. Different kinds of tips are selected based on the type of skin the patient has, and how uneven the texture is. The discomfort is slightly increased for a patient using diamond-tips, however, crystal microdermabrasion has the same effect. For sensitive skin, this is the more beneficial option.

Microdermabrasion can achieve dramatic results, but it is highly dependent on the skill of the technician. Multiple treatments are usually suggested in order to get the most from this technique, skin texture and type will determine how many are needed. How a patient responds to the initial treatment will help to direct the provider to complete a plan that will deliver the results needed with the correct amount of visits to achieve the expected effect. The first treatments usually bring very positive results and make a patient happy, but to make sure all issues with skin complexion are addressed, more sessions are typically needed. It is generally advised to follow up with regular maintenance treatments every 3-4 months. And because the machine can be adjusted depending on skin type and condition, even people with sensitive skin can get a treatment from a skilled professional.

This is a safe, non-surgical, and highly demanded process, but it does not mean that side effects from microdermabrasion are not possible occasionally. As mentioned, the microdermabrasion treatment sandblasts the skin which will slightly traumatize it and create a reaction. There could be some slight bruising, skin sensitivity and skin tightness or redness. It goes away within hours, and is expected. Abrasions that are relatively minor have been known to occur, isolated minor bleeding can also happen. Skin microdermabrasion treatments have little risk for clients, require no anaesthesia and there are no harmful chemicals being used on your delicate facial skin. This process is much easier on the skin and safer than facial peels that involve chemicals or lasers.
